Shopping My Closet!

Hey everyone! Everything I’m wearing you’ve seen before — just not in this combination. Proof that this fashion blogger isn’t always wearing something new!

The jeans you’ve seen before here. Yes, they’re my new style of jeans (aka maternity jeans) that I’m loving. One thing I’ve figured out is you have to be careful wearing a crop top with these jeans b/c the non-jean fabric that covers your tummy can sometimes show. And some of the belly fabric (I like that description. I may have to keep using it) looks like underwear so it’s definitely noticeable. In the future I’m going to look for the belly fabric in dark blue or black if I think there will be a possibility of it showing. Just something to keep in mind while you’re looking.

This tank top is a serious clothing workhorse. You’ve seen it so many times on this blog. It is the most forgiving top and has a v-neck or round-collar option just by turning it around (no front, no back, no tag!). When I want a top to just be in the background, I grab this one. And it’s sleeveless so it’s good for when the temperatures are warm or your jacket is tight in the armhole or sleeve. White House Black Market always seems to carry this but it’s not always on sale. Here it’s on sale and in other color options too!

The shoes I’ve worn before too. I wanted to try loafers since I didn’t have any and I wanted to try a print on my shoes. These fit the bill, but I actually struggle finding items to wear with them. So far, I’ve been happy wearing them with skinny jeans and regular office-type pants (you know, those boring, nondescript pants like I wore here). I may have to push myself out of my comfort zone to try them with other items (like maybe a skirt?) to see if I can get more wear out of them. These exact loafers are no longer available, but I saw some similar ones here and here and if money were no object I would just have to try these!

Shopping My Closet! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This jacket I bought last fall so unfortunately it’s no longer available from Maurices. Though I don’t often shop at Maurices, because a lot of their clothes seem to be geared for younger women, I do appreciate that they have jackets that go up to size 16 and 18 or Xl and XXL before they go into the plus size. I actually don’t fit into plus-size. When I try plus-size, it’s usually too big everywhere except bust and waist. So I appreciate going slightly higher in the straight sizes.

Then finishing off this outfit with a new black purse. My old black purse doesn’t have any structure, it just kind of flops along on my arm. I feel a bag with some stiff structure can elevate an outfit quickly from frumpy to more put-together, especially if you’re wearing more slouchy items.

So, just shopping from my closet with this outfit but still keeping it interesting and avoiding ruts. I hope your day is as bright as this red is! I’m squinting just looking at these pictures!

This Jacket Is Cut Just For Me!

Hey everyone!  I’ve been meaning to show this jacket since Christmas but kept forgetting to photograph it! And of course by now I can’t find it on any websites to show you, but luckily Calvin Klein makes this same jacket, just in different fabrics, each season.

Great Style of Jacket | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This jacket is faux suede, so more suited for winter. You’ve seen me wear this same cut of jacket but in different fabrics here and here.  This is a style of jacket that works really well for my shape. The cropped length works for my short-waisted self and I really like the rounded collars.

This must be a popular cut because Calvin Klein updates it often and has several options here and here and here. If you’re looking for a warmer weather version in a lighter color here is one and the lightweight denim version that is in style now. And from last spring, when I wore the navy blue one, I’m still able to find it here.

Great Style of Jacket | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

There are slight shoulder pads but they fit my shoulders well without sitting on top of my shoulders or making me look like a football player. The arms are roomy and the fabric has some stretch. It also has some fitting stitching, so you get some shape at the waist and in the back. They also have nice details like the lining or the snaps on the cuffs. I appreciate those little details!

Great Style of Jacket | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’m wearing my ever-faithful J.Jill pencil skirt and I bought myself a new necklace. I meant to wear blue tights with this outfit (they would have looked better) but could not find them (I believe my daughter may have an idea where they may be…) so gray it is!

Great Style of Jacket | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

So, I’m glad that I’ve found a cut that works well on me and I’m hoping the brand keeps updating this style. I just have to be careful I don’t get into a style rut and just wear this style over and over! Maybe three jackets should be my limit? We’ll see….Have a great week everyone!

I Would If I Could….Spring Rain Coat!

Hey everyone! I already have a rain coat for spring and fall but if I didn’t I would be getting one of these! Look how flattering the waist buckle is on this first one!

Cute rain coat for apple-shaped women with a big bust! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This jacket has a really pretty leopard print on the inside and the hood. And though it’s a bit tight on me (I’m wearing the XL) if you’re a bit smaller than me this would fit well. They do have the XXL so that might work too. Here it is in petite and here in plus size.

Cute rain coat for apple-shaped women with a big bust! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This jacket below is a pretty soft pinkish gray. It has a hood but it doesn’t bunch up on my shoulders. I usually stay away from belted items, especially like this, but because it belts higher, right under my bust, it looks better. It’s available here in plus size. If you’re not crazy about the belt, Calvin Klein has a very similar jacket without the belt here and in plus size here.

I never wear fit and flare dresses but in coats and jackets I love the silhouette. Fit and flare are where the top is more fitted and then the skirt flares out. I usually don’t want the top that fitted and have always thought a slimmer skirt was more flattering but I might give it a try in a dress since I think it looks really nice in the first jacket.

So, I can’t justify buying another spring coat when I already have a perfectly serviceable one but maybe one of you ladies out there were on the lookout. If so, I hope this helps and good luck shopping!

Jean Jacket Love!

Hey everyone! Can I just say how much I am loving this jean jacket this spring?

Jean Jacket Love! | www.whenthegirlsrule.comI have been wearing it all over Instagram with a dressy outfit and with casual items like this one. When I first wore this on the blog, I mentioned how I first slipped my arm into and just sighed because I knew this was going to be the one! It fit well and the material worked and the style felt so much like me! It’s also available here in plus sizes.

Jean Jacket Love! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

It has some shaping in the back so you don’t look like a big box and I know this is weird, but I really like how it fits in the wrists. It’s not too big around the wrist where you feel you have to pull them up to keep them from dragging or getting in the way. I know, it’s the little things!

Jean Jacket Love! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I wore these jeans for the last post but didn’t talk about them a lot. This cropped, flare look is a new style that I saw being worn over in the European blogs last year and are over here now. They have some flair at the cuff so they have a wider silhouette. Different than what we’re used to but a way to freshen up your cropped jeans. Yes, they’re maternity jeans again. From now on just assume they are maternity unless I’m wearing an old pair. Now that I’ve discovered the comfort level of them I’m not going back!

Jean Jacket Love! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’m still wearing my flats for these photos because my sprained ankle is not back to 100% yet, so I’m taking it easy. My pair is from last year, but I see tons of really cute ones out there. If you’re like me and don’t like how flats slip off these are a good option because they are tied on and don’t slip. Ok, everyone, have a wonderful week and I’ll catch up with you on Friday!

Ok, Here Are The Suggestions!

Hey everyone! So, after last Wednesday’s post, it sounded like most people wanted me to give the shirt another try. Now, I couldn’t change the color and would have if that was an option, but I tried all the suggestions that were given. I did change up the shoes for my cute pink flats and some new cropped flair jeans. So, let’s see all the suggestions!

Here is the shirt with a large necklace that actually made me feel less bare. It was also suggested to try tying the knot of the shirt in other places. Here it is tied low.

Trying all of the suggestions! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And this option it’s tied higher up.

Here with a smaller necklace.

Trying all of the suggestions! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I 100% agree with everyone that the color is the biggest problem. So, I tried to add some color with the scarves I have that would still go with the outfit. Here I’ve tried a smaller scarf with the latest scarf tying trend.

Trying all of the suggestions! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Here I tried a scarf looped around my neck and hanging in the front and back.

Trying all of the suggestions! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This is an infinity scarf I thought I would try so I wouldn’t have another knotted piece of fabric. It seemed like having two knotted bits of fabric was a bit much.

Well, I still don’t think I’m loving this shirt. The color of the shirt just can’t be overcome. I did like trying all of the options and seeing how one little accessory change made a big change in the look and also how I felt while wearing them. Another good analysis of an outfit from lots of perspectives and opinions! Have a great week ladies!

My Number One Outfit Tip For Apple-Shaped Women!

Hey everyone! My favorite tip or guide I use when putting together an outfit is the “column” look. You’ve seen this tip in use many times (like here and here) on this blog. Basically, you want a solid color from top to bottom which creates a longer, leaner look. I find this to be a really flattering look for our shape. Need a better description? Check out my new video!

If the video does not appear, please click here.

I’m happy to say that Debbie F. and lilmom883 were the winners of the $25 gift certificate. If you’re lilmom883, please check your email and get back to me. Thanks everyone for such a fun party! Have a great weekend ladies!

Really, I Don’t Do This Intentionally!

Hey everyone! When I do a photo shoot, I honestly think the outfit looks good. I really don’t want bad pictures of myself out on the internet! So, I thought this top looked good in the store. I thought it looked good in front of the full length mirror in my bedroom. I thought it looked good when we were photographing. But, when I started looking at the pictures…bad.

Not done intentionally! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’m always on the look out for a shirt for warmer weather, that gives me coverage without having to wear another layer over it. I thought this tie type shirt would do the trick. I have a cotton sweater with the similar style that I like that you’ve seen before. Why would the shirt be any different?

Not done intentionally! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

The fabric is the first problem. It’s thin so it doesn’t hang well. In fact it clings and goes against my advice of “Skim Don’t Cling”.

Not done intentionally! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

The color is the second problem. This tan does not do anything for my coloring. I was trying something new besides blue and black and was seduced by the polka dots!

The third problem is it has a lower neckline than I had thought. I think it makes my chest bigger. It seems that there is so much skin there and yet not even a peep of cleavage. It really emphasizes that gravity is winning!

Not done intentionally! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’m wearing my new jeans that have changed my life (seriously on sale now) and my cute ballet flats from last fall. The toe box seems short so you might want to order a 1/2 size up. If you’re curious, the top is here and doesn’t even look good on the model. Just goes to show you that if the model can’t pull it off, probably not going to work on a curvier woman!

Today is the last day to sign up for email to be included in my birthday give-away. If you’re already signed up, then you’re already entered. I’ll announce the winners on Friday!

I Would If I Could…Dress Barn Edition!

Hey everyone! Have we all recovered from that party? Whew! That was fun!

Anyway, I did some shopping at Dress Barn and found several jackets that would work great for our shape. Like all of these “I Would If I Could” posts, these are items that I would have bought if I didn’t already own something similar or if I needed it or if I had limitless money. Even though I’m not buying the item, it’s still an item that would work well for our shape. As we know, those items are hard to find, so I’ll alert you whenever I do find something. Ignore the schmutz on the mirror please!

If I Were Rich! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This one is a really lightweight jacket and has a really flattering cut. If I didn’t already own a white jacket I totally would have bought it. I love the vertical/flattering zippers and the lapels that aren’t too big. Nancy, from the party post, also owns it and it looks great on her too. It’s also available in plus size.

If I Were Rich! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’m also pushing myself to try on different items that I wouldn’t usually purchase, just to see how they would look. This light vest will be good for warmer weather because you can still have coverage but keep cool too.

If I Were Rich! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I think it adds a bit of glamour to anything you wore underneath. I could see it being perfect for an outside wedding or outside party — anyplace where you want to look a bit dressed up but still keep cool.

If I Were Rich! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

You’ve seen me wear my military style jacket before here and that style is still on trend this season. I am wearing the clearance winter version here in the micro-suede that has that stand-up collar I really think is flattering.

If I Were Rich! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

The purple one is no longer on their website though you may find it in your local store on clearance. Here is the olive-colored spring version. Dress Barn is great about larger sizes so they also have it in plus size here.

If I Were Rich! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Do you remember the beautiful floral jackets I tried on in that shop in Detroit? Dress Barn has some similar ones. Straight size version here. I just saw them on their website and haven’t tried them on but if you stop by there they might be worth a try on!

Have a great weekend everyone!

It’s A Party!

Hey! Welcome to the birthday party! Come on in!

blog birthday!

Can I take your coat? Oh, look at you! Looking stylish as always! Love that outfit on you! Glass of champagne? Or mint lemonade? My two favorites!

blog birthday!

This is Dave. He’ll be our waiter today. You know him as the photographer/husband. Thanks honey!

Our waiter!

Come on in and let me introduce you to everyone.

This is Cindy. She was the first one here. She’s from North Carolina and don’t you totally love her shoes? Oh my gosh! She can rock the white shirt so much better than I can!

blog birthday!

Come and meet Carol Ann from Idaho. I’ll let her tell her own story: “You might remember that you told me to ease in to wearing my style changes by wearing them to lunches or dinners. That was the best advice. I’m feeling much more comfortable and today I’m actually wearing one of my outfits to work for the whole day! So far so good. Thank you, Julia! I feel like It’s liberating to let go of being self-conscious!” Plus, she brought her dog to the party! I love that!

Blog Birthday!

Some of you may know Susan. She is another blogger who really helps you construct an outfit and shows you the good and bad. Her blog is Over 5o Under 20  and she has been a good friend to this blog and blogger!

Birthday Party!

Susan also brought her friend Ann. Ann is looking fabulous and check out the necklace! Beautiful!

Birthday Party!

Let me introduce you to Nancy. She’s the one with the beautiful smile. She’s from Kentucky and was deciding between two outfits, this one she ended up wearing, but also one with the exact same jacket I tried on at Dress Barn and will be showing Friday in a “I Would If I Could” post. Great minds think alike!

Here is Leslie from Michigan. She is a good friend in real life and though she’s not an apple-shape (actually quite slim) she learned to love tall boots and to go for a long and lean look. I’m also pushing her to try more edgy outfits too (sssshhh, don’t tell her!).

Happy Blog B-day!

This is Kay from Corpus Christi, Texas. She’s wearing an old top but it’s totally on-trend with florals this spring and just didn’t want to miss a good party! She must just look at my cold weather outfits and laugh and laugh!

This beauty is Rhonda. She is a good friend in real life too and has always been stylish. She’s also the baby here since she just turned 30. We were friends before I figured out this fashion thing and I was always so impressed with her style and her use of colors! She also knows how to make an entrance!

Blog Birthday Guest!

First, I want to thank my beautiful models here who took a step out of their comfort zone and sent me pictures of themselves. I’m very touched by your trust to send a picture to someone on the internet! It’s so nice to see all of your faces for a change! I will be sending you all a token of my appreciation.

Second, I want to thank all of you ladies out there. I didn’t know what this blog would become or how it would evolve or how it would be such a part of my life. I took a jump and you all were there to catch me. I would not still be doing this if it weren’t for all of the comments and emails and lovely words I receive from all of you!

For my guests attending out there, I would like to give you a party favor for coming to this birthday! For me to know who’s attended, please sign up for my email list by next Wednesday, March 29 and I’ll randomly be picking two guests to receive a $25 gift certificate. If you’re already signed up for the email, then don’t worry, you’re already entered. As you all know, I never will sell or give away your email.

And I know your presence is my present, however, if you want to give this blog an additional present, please share your favorite post to Pinterest or Facebook. It’s easy. All you have to do is go to the bottom of your chosen post and click the Facebook symbol or the Pinterest symbol and it will go to your account. I want more women to know this corner of the internet is here and you well-dressed ladies are my best ambassadors to help spread the word, so thank you!

So, everyone mix and mingle. Talk fashion. Talk books. Talk movies. Drink champagne. Eat potato chips. Eat cake. Thanks everyone for coming and we’ll do it again next year! I’ll go turn up the music!
