A Shortie Wearing Wide Pants!

Hey everyone! So, conventional wisdom says a short person shouldn’t wear wide-legged pants because it makes them look shorter. Well, I’m anything but conventional!

I don’t think I look any shorter actually. Really, how much taller can a pair of pants make you look anyhow and why can’t I just look short? I’m ok with that!

So, with wider, flowy bottoms, I needed a more-fitted top. As you know, I’m not really crazy about anything tight on the top, so this jacket is as tight as I will get. It does have some structure and shaping, so it’s a little bit more fitted. You could wear a flowy top and flowy bottom, and it’s a nice casual look, but to make this more work appropriate I wanted to have some structure and seriousness!

These pants are from a Michigan brand called Haystacks. This is one of those vacation purchases (i.e. bought under the influence!) that is not usually something I would buy, but sometimes you need a few unique pieces of clothing. They’re really comfortable and I bought the most-outlandish pattern just to have something a little more crazy in my closet (besides anΒ orangish-pink purse)!

All of the photos from this and the last few posts were taken in the Eastern Market in downtown Detroit. It’s a historic farmer’s market/warehouse district, that has a bunch of great murals. My photographer/husband and I were in heaven finding great photo locations!

This picture below is such a representation of Detroit now. Old, industrial city being revised and re-inhabited by artists and creatives. Such an interesting transformation. It’s still gritty but has jaw-dropping art in the most unexpected places!

On a side note, I’m unexpectedly heading to Charlotte, NC this Saturday for a week’s stay. Don’t worry. It’s not for a funeral or anything bad. I’ve never been there, so I’d love to hear any recommendations from you if you’ve been. My week is pretty open for exploring!

  1. Julia—these pants are so perfect for spring!
And I say the same thing all the time. I’m never going to trick anyone into thinking that I’m tall when they meet me—no matter what I’m wearing!
So I love that you’re going against the “rules”!
    You look fantastic!

    1. Yes Jodie! I think I remember you saying something before about why is it only skinny is considered desirable. Same thing. Why is it supposed to be tall is something that is better? Me thinks it has something to do with how a designer’s clothes hang on one body compared to another’s body. Hmmmmm

  2. I like the pants and the scenery!
And I agree with the why-not statement: if we love some piece of clothing, it can make us happy and happiness makes beautiful, whether short or tall.

  3. When you are in Charlotte, NC, you really need to spend a morning or afternoon touring the Billy Graham Library. It is a very moving place to visit.

  4. Yesss! Great looking outfit on you. Love the wide leg pants in floral design; everything flows together with a dressy/casual vibe (IMO). And you do look
taller, even if you don’t want to, lol.

  5. I think the pants look great! You don’t look short at all. The light color of the jacket (which is really pretty) picks up on the light colors in the pants and it actually seems to make you look longer, if that makes sense!

  6. Fantastic outfit!! I love your wide-leg pants. I’ve met a number of women who refuse to wear wide-leg pants because they don’t think they’re tall enough. You are an excellent example of showing them how it’s done. The fitting jacket is perfect. And your locations are stunning. I’m happy to hear about the artist renewal going on there. I found you at Anna’s Island Style wearing your fabulous blue blazer.

  7. Love the printed pant! Wide-schmide – they make you look like a fun and interesting person, which you are – so what’s the disconnect??

I’ve been wanting some printed pants for summer but haven’t found Quite the Right Ones yet…but I’m not giving up.

Love all your scenic locations for photos, it’s so fun to get out of your usual “box” and go different places. Detroit is seeming like 10-years-ago-ish Brooklyn these days πŸ™‚ Now Brooklyn is mostly so “civilized,” it doesn’t have the same feel that it did. It’s so great to wander around and get pictures before places become “too” (in my mind) gentrified.

    Hope you enjoy(ed) South Carolina!
