Pretty Fall Brights!

Hey everyone! I decided to mix all my brights together today to counteract the gray clouds! I love wearing this skirt in the fall. I feel like the bright green is such a foil for the darker fall colors and lightens up an outfit. The blue top adds the electricity!

Over 40 apple-shaped blogger | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

The burgundy sweater you’ve seen before (many times!) and I have no intention of giving it a rest. I have even pulled out my grey and black sweater, just like this one, anticipating more sweater weather as the temperature cools down. Everything I’m wearing today you’ve seen before on the blog. Proof that you don’t always have to have something new and it can be fun to mix things up a bit in your closet!

The blue shirt is an on-trend item right now. That means I’m going to wear the heck out of it because in a year or so it will look outdated (unless I do some sewing with the choker part of the shirt and then it’s just a classic v-neck, hmmmmmm). Adding a trendy shirt or two is an easy way to update your wardrobe and usually pretty easy to pair with the more classic items in your closet.

This sweater looks so darn cute when the wind is blowing it around!

The leopard print flats are getting a lot of wear this fall too. I usually wear some kind of heel with a skirt since I think it looks more professional and a little more formal. However, sometimes you just don’t feel like wearing heels. I decided to give the flats a try since I see lots of women wearing them this way and they look cute, though a little more casual. I can’t wear the teenager kind of flats because there usually is no support, but these have cushion in the sole so are more comfortable. Plus, this leopard print pairs really well with the brights and I could see some cute leopard print mules looking very smart here too (especially these!).

Over 40 apple-shaped blogger | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And I don’t know if I need to talk about the purse anymore since I’ve talked about it so much already. I considered pulling out my black purse to kind of ground the outfit in neutral black and match up the tights, but I have a hard time exchanging this purse for a bland one. I’m finding the pumpkin color still brings me a smile!

You will be happy to know that I am getting better at taking my own photos (finally!) and have found some good spots in my backyard. You can see in the distance my horses who are very uninterested and unimpressed with my photography skills as they keep their heads down grazing the grass the whole time! Oh well! Have a great week everyone!

Little Black Dress Anyone?

Hey everyone! We’ve all heard that a classic wardrobe item for every woman should be a little black dress. Usually that means short, tight and bare, not really my style anymore. I have a nice sensible cotton knit black dress but I wouldn’t wear it for a nice occasion nor consider it a little black dress. But, this one I would!

Little Black Dress For An Apple Shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This dress is made of ponte material which is a heavier fabric (perfect for skimming and not clinging!) that has stretch but keeps it’s shape. You’ve probably seen lots of leggings from this material. They keep improving this fabric so it looks and feels smarter. The sleeves are a nice 3/4 length and has the ruffle on the edge. A pretty detail but not too trendy that it will look out of place next year. It’s also available in a really pretty blue too.

Little Black Dress For An Apple Shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I could see this dress with a big, artistic statement necklace too instead of a scarf. This scarf is really large so there are lots of ways it could have been worn with this dress though I’m only showing two options. If you pop over to my Facebook page I posted a video showing a surprisingly huge variety of ways to tie a scarf.

Little Black Dress For An Apple Shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Pretend I’m carrying a gold or silver clutch instead of the leopard print clutch! For a nice occasion I would use a clutch but since I only have one (working on that though!) I decided to use the leopard print even though it’s more casual since it’s suede. I probably wouldn’t wear two leopard prints together either unless they were exactly the same, but you get the idea.

Little Black Dress For An Apple Shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I decided to keep the outfit toned down and just wore my black pumps. Though it could be zinged up with my red shoes as you can imagine! Or even the bronze metallic version or silver metallic version of those pumps.

This black dress is such a great canvas for jewelry, shoes and other accessories. As long as it continues to fit well, I’d say I’ve found my little black dress! Have a great weekend everyone!

Re-imagining The Special Occasion Items!

Hey everyone! Happy Wednesday! So, I had originally bought these pretty red heels to wear for special occasions but I don’t have all that many special occasions at the moment. Also, I always want to get my money out of an item, so before I purchase something costly I consider the cost-per-wear, which means if it’s expensive, I better be wearing them often!

Top for a big-bust and apple shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

So when I kept seeing these heels sitting in my closet looking all bright and pretty I decided I had to to re-imagine their purpose and kinda play a trick on my brain to get them into regular rotation. This is like drawing the boobs on the model. It’s just a way to get my mind thinking in the right direction. So, when I wore these out to dinner last Saturday, I pretended they were just red booties with suede ribbons over the top instead of full-on suede. Then, pairing them with jeans was easy because everyone wears booties with jeans all the time!

Top for a big-bust and apple shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I love how they so quickly and easily elevate an outfit. Honestly, you could be wearing the most boring outfit and if you popped these shoes on you would have upped your style game tenfold. Instant fashionista! They’re also available in a metallic bronze which would be just as effective. Even though they are a higher heel than I usually wear, the suede ribbons are sturdy and hold your foot in place. The heel is also designed so it is under more of your foot than a traditional heel.

Top for a big-bust and apple shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

As you know, I am always on the lookout for tops that look good all by themselves and don’t need a “third piece” like a jacket or sweater over the top to make it presentable (especially when it’s 80 degrees!). For my apple-shape they are few and far between. But, when I find one that’s easy to wear all by itself then I know I’ll be wearing it a lot.

Top for a big-bust and apple shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This top is so easy to wear. It is my favorite fabric mix of rayon and spandex and it’s really soft. It does have a high slit on the side, which gives it the room for my shape, but requires a tank top or something underneath unless you don’t mind a bit of skin showing. I mind, especially in that area! I can’t find the exact top on the Loft website but they have it in blue here, a longer tunic here and in pink and white here. Perhaps you’ll have better luck at your local store. Looking at these pictures I would have added a longer necklace to make it more polished, though when I was getting dressed I thought the cowl neck was enough. But, I can see a pop of color, maybe red, maybe the necklace I wore in the last post, would have been a nice addition.

And lastly I added my clutch that is sold out online (though sometimes they re-stock) but I saw that my local Chico’s had some so perhaps you’ll be able to find it at your store. If not, here and here are very similar. I am finding this clutch is really handy when going out so I am on the lookout to add another to my collection!

Ok, well, I hope this helps you re-think some of your special occasion items in your closet that you want to wear but feel, for whatever reason, that you shouldn’t. Really, if we love it we should wear it as often as possible even if it means playing some sort of trick on your brain! See you Friday!

Ahhhhh Fall!

Hey everyone! How serene do these pictures look? I want to re-do my senior pictures with these! Of course, I’m closer to the one definition of “senior” than the high school version!

How to dress a big stomach | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Anyway, you’ve seen all of these items before. This pretty sweater is made of silk in the knit so it hangs really nicely and has this subtle silk hem which adds a little style to an otherwise basic sweater. It’s also 40% off right now! This sweater also comes in black, mushroom and brown if those colors work with your wardrobe better. It’s also available in plus sizes and in several colors or a long duster version in two green versions and burnt red.

How to dress a big stomach | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

The peep toe booties have been going everywhere I go since they are a perfect transition shoe where it’s too cool to wear the wide open sandals but too warm to start wearing the closed toe version (that will be here soon enough!). I love the beige I have but they are very tempting in olive and a shiny cinnamon.

How to dress a big stomach | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And finishing with the star of the show purse and my vanilla jeans. I like how these jeans are a soft white rather than my bright white jeans and they have a looser fit in the legs but fit perfectly in the waist. They also have a curvy version. Really, the only thing new in this outfit is the necklace. It has a real pressed flower under the glass. It’s a fun little pop of color I’m wearing more than I thought I would. Several pretty versions here and here.

So, my husband has headed back down to North Carolina. It was a fun week and nice to have him home for an extended time. The saying goodbye though is not fun at all, as I’m sure you all can imagine. But, we’re soldiering on and we’ll keep moving towards our goal of living in the same state eventually! I hope North Carolina’s autumn is as beautiful as this one! Have a great week everyone!

A Well-Loved Sweater!

Hey everyone! I know I’ve shown you this sweater twice before but I don’t think either time I did this sweater justice with the pictures. They were too dark or too shadowy so I wanted to do it justice! Plus, I wear it a lot so it’s bound to show up in many outfits. But, hurry, it’s on sale at 1/3 off so it will probably go quick!

Perfect sweater for an apple-shape with a big bust! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

They also have it available in black, off white and tan if those colors suit you more. I have it in black and gray but so far this fall I haven’t felt like wearing those colors yet. I think because we’ve had such a warm and sunny autumn I’m not ready for the winter colors yet.

Perfect sweater for an apple-shape with a big bust! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This top is a perfect little sleeveless addition for the fall weather. I love the pattern and the material is very skimmy, not clingy. It’s also a very low cost ($12) way to add the mock neck trend into your wardrobe for this fall and then bring it back out in the spring with these pretty colors. They also have it in a deep green.

Perfect sweater for an apple-shape with a big bust! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’m wearing my new favorite jeans (I know I say that a lot — I’m a fickle friend!). I am loving pink this fall which is so weird since usually I associate that color with spring. But, it’s been fun wearing these jeans with deep fall colors for a fresh mix. Plus, I love the little details these pants have on the ankle. They are on sale so if you are looking for pants that fit an apple-shape I highly suggest these!

Perfect sweater for an apple-shape with a big bust! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Now, I’m also sorry to be on repeat with the shoes (on sale now too!) and the bag but they are so easy to mix with any outfit! The purse makes the outfit zing with it’s color (and they have some other beautiful colors like “fog” and “midnight“)and the leopard print adds interest but I feel the brown and black kinda cancel each other out, so they end up being an almost neutral.

This photogenic building was the B&B we stayed at last weekend. So, if you’re ever in Sutton’s Bay and want a photogenic instagram photo I’d suggest here! Quote is by Elizabeth Taylor.

My husband is here until Sunday so we’re off to do some fun things like canoeing and a bike ride (and more photos!). Have a great weekend everyone!

Sweater Weather!

Hey everyone! I know I’ve said this before but autumn is my absolute favorite season. I love how the leaves are so beautiful but I also love how the plants are not such blindingly green but are more subtle colors and you can start to appreciate the structure of the plant rather than just the color. I think I appreciate every beautiful day more knowing that winter is right around the corner too!

Sweater for apple-shape | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

It’s also sweater season and as an apple-shaped woman there is a lot of selection for us if we get the fabric right. I definitely don’t want anything too clingy or form-fitting so it’s a balance to have some shape so it doesn’t look like I’m wearing a bag but it needs to skim and hang flatteringly. This sweater is actually a light cotton fabric, in kind of a waffle weave so it has substance from the knit but is light from the material.

Sweater for apple-shape | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

As we proved in this post  when the top has a pattern it looks more like a complete outfit than a solid colored top. I was drawn to the design on the sweater since it’s so interesting and has pattern but is not overwhelming. I tried a necklace with this but felt it was competing with the design so I ditched it.

Sweater for apple-shape | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I completed this cozy look with my black booties from last year (similar here and here), black leggings and my pretty bag which is back in stock now!

Sweater for apple-shape | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And lastly, I debated whether to talk about the #MeToo phenomenon where women are coming forward to say that they have been sexually harassed. I don’t want this space to be political, though I know sexual harassment affects women of all political persuasions (and size and age and color and ethnicity and religion and… sigh). I debated with myself that this is a fashion site that helps women dress better but further thinking made me realize this is a “confidence site”. I want women to be more confident and clothes just happen to be the focus.

So, let me say, #MeToo. I was harassed at age 15 by my boss who was at least twice my age, by a coworker at a non-profit who I went to my supervisor about, and then I was let go, and by a Congressman who finally went down in flames when he was a big-city mayor when one woman (not me) had the courage to speak up.

Now, I’m not looking for sympathy or to discuss this to death because if you’re female, you already know about this. But, if you are a male, this might be new to you and I’d like to move this discussion forward so it’s not just us women discussing it over a glass of wine. I think the best way to do that is to enlist the men in our lives as our allies. The easiest way is to ask them to say “Dude, that’s not cool” when they hear something sexist. Yes, they can say and do more but I’ll take that.

Ok everyone, I’m really liking this idea that this is a “confidence site” and it seems like it has legs, especially as a mission statement. I want to keep this place fresh, not just for you, but for me too. Well, let’s see where this goes!

Wine Country Outfit!

Hey everyone! I hope you had a great weekend because I sure did! My husband came home and we went “up north” to Michigan’s wine country with another couple and had a blast! It is so nice when the husbands get along but these two are besties!

whenthegirlsrule.com

So, it was beautiful weather the first day and now that I have my husband/photographer in town for a few days I am getting all the photographs I can from him!

Fall fashion for apple shapes | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

You’ve seen this top before. It’s “the fixer” since I can wear it over any other top and it fixes the bottom layer. I’m wearing a sleeveless burgundy top you’ve seen many times (like here) so it blends really nicely with the fixer. This top has stretch so it works over my bust but is still lace fabric, so kind of stiff and hangs nicely.

Fall fashion for apple shapes | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I have found some super adorable pink pants! I’ve been looking for a light pink pair and I love how these have the buttons up the ankle. The pants are on sale now even though I paid full price so if you’re interested do not delay! I’m not quite ready for full length pants yet and find these ankle length flattering and a fun way to show off cute shoes!

Fall fashion for apple shapes | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And you’ve seen my purse already many times (get ready for more in the future!) but it adds so much to an outfit! Such a pop of color! I’m having so much fun with it.

I’ll leave you with some of the pictures from this weekend trip. Northern Michigan is so beautiful in the fall with all the hardwoods changing color and the rolling hills and lakes. Really a beautiful part of the country. Enjoy!

Tips For Successful Online Shopping!

Hey everyone! Sorry I was MIA on Wednesday. I was writing this post but feeling too rushed to do it justice so I took my time and did it right. Enjoy!

So, I’ve been doing a lot of online shopping this fall and have noticed some cheats I use to see if the item will actually fit and look good on my apple shape. If you are just getting started on discovering your style again I do not recommend online shopping. It’s too discouraging to order 5 things and then send all 5 back. But, once you start figuring out the brands that fit you and start recognizing the cuts and fabrics that work for your shape, you will have more success, not 100%, but I’d say 50%. I’ll take those odds!

First, and funnest, is look for items that look terrible on the model! Yes, I said it! If you have an apple shape like me then we have the opposite shape of the model and if it doesn’t look good on her then the chances are better that it will look good on you. Case in point:apple shape shopping tips! | www.whenthegirlsrule.comCompare that suede jacket to how it looks on this full-figured woman:apple shape shopping tips! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com This is a fun way to start! You can see more items like this here, here, here and here. (I could go on and on!) It’s also helpful if it looks like the model is saying “Ew” too! 🙂

Read the reviews. If people comment that the fit is weird or boxy or just off, then that is your clue! I am not kidding! http://shopstyle.it/l/j9vaThis coat, besides looking bulky on the model had really bad reviews. But, it fits me perfectly!A Cute Coat for an Apple Shaped Woman! - www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Look at the fabric content. You always hear me say a top needs to “skim not cling”. Rayon doesn’t cling. A heavier knit doesn’t cling. Heavier silk doesn’t cling. Magnify the fabric if possible to determine how it will hang on your body. If it looks like it’s hanging straight down off the flat-chested model then usually it means it has some weight and will skim not cling.

A fine knit usually is too clingy apple shape sweaterand a large knit is usually too bulkytoo bulky for curvy women

so look for a medium knit with some weight to it. whenthegirlsrule.comBest way to determine that is to look at the hem. You can usually gage if it’s heavier and will behave online tips www.whenthegirlsrule.com

or light and rippling by the hem.whenthegirlsrule.com

Look for fabric content that has stretch. We usually need an item to stretch somewhere so that means it has spandex, nylon or polyester mixed in so it will give you that stretch. Rayon/spandex mix is my favorite or cotton knit/spandex.

If it looks swishy on the model it will probably billow out when it’s on a curvier woman (especially if it’s 100% polyester).online tips www.whenthegirlsrule.com

As opposed to just looking loose.

online tips www.whenthegirlsrule.com

If you start to get starry-eyed and forget that it will not look the same way on you as it does on the model do this: Draw, with your finger, two big boobs on the model on your screen. Yes, you’re going to have to make them lower too.

This will remind you to put the item in context. If you don’t have a big bust then you could draw a big stomach, but either way it snaps you back into reality so you can look at the item better. The top shirt doesn’t pass the boob test because the sewn in wrap style will be pulled sideways too much by your bust and then pull the hem up too high and start showing tummy. The bottom sweater will work because it will stretch sideways and up but looks like it has enough fabric either way.

whenthegirlsrule.com

Also, look to see if the item has extra fabric at the armpit. That means there will be more room for a bigger bust. whenthegirlsrule.com

And lastly, don’t purchase online on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Most stores have their sales on the weekends (25% off, free-shipping, $50 off of $150, etc…) which they usually start on Thursday and go to Sunday though they often extend to Monday.

Ok, I hope that helps and remember when you’re at home trying on your items and standing in front of the mirror, say to yourself “It’s not me. It’s the clothes.” when something doesn’t work. Good luck!

Bring In The Fixer!

Hey everyone! Happy Monday! Sorry I’m late posting this today — just had to sign the paperwork this morning for our new house! Yes, the sellers accepted our offer and we’ll be closing in 28 days! Now my husband can get out of his very sad bachelor apartment and we’re halfway through this whole moving equation!

Apple shape fashion! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And talking about husbands, my husband/photographer will be here on Wednesday for an 11 day vacation! Thank goodness because I am way over this solo picture taking! Now, I’ll have someone to tell me when my pant hem is halfway rolled up and can get me to smile. Doing them by myself has been so frustrating because on the phone it looks like the right lighting but when I go back to check on the camera they’re either way too light or way too dark. Plus, half the time it doesn’t click so as I check to see what’s wrong, it takes the picture, and this is how many of them turn out with me looking down at my phone!

Apple shape fashion! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Anyhow, onto the clothes! This top is what I call a wardrobe fixer. It is a top you can wear with or over an item of clothing and it makes that item work. For example, I wore this on Saturday when it was over 80 degrees and I was walking around a sculpture park. So, I needed an outfit that was cool and comfortable but, come on, it’s a week into October so it needed to be somewhat fall-like. I’m wearing a tank top underneath, something I would not wear alone but I didn’t want to be hot and sweaty. I popped the fixer over the tank top and I’m covered, season-appropriate and yet still cool! Fixed!

Apple shape fashion! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I have a dress I like to wear but it’s a little too snug in the midriff so I’m going to wear this top over it, and voila, it’s fixed! I have a cotton long sleeve shirt that is really soft but it’s a little too sheer so I’m going to pop this over the top and again, it’s fixed. I can wear a tank top that blends with this color or one that is a bright color and contrasts and then I have two very different tops.

Apple shape fashion! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Remember how last spring I wrote a post about how to wear your spring dresses before spring? Well, this is a way to wear your summer dresses into fall. And think of all those sleeveless dresses out there that can be worn another way besides topping with a jacket. If this burgundy isn’t working for you they have it available in black here. They have it in a more geometric design and non-ruffled sleeves in black here.

I’m wearing my totally cute peep toe booties with my ever fashionable bag that you’ve seen before. The bag is sold out but I have found very similar bags in several price points here, here and here. I do have a new necklace though that I added. Ok, that’s it for today. Talk to you again on Wednesday!

Velvet For Wearing Now!

Hey everyone! Have you seen the proliferation of velvet around this fall? It’s definitely having it’s moment this fall and winter. This is one of those trends that can refresh your wardrobe and look nice for any holiday activities you may have. Don’t spend too much though because it’s a trend and will look too heavy once spring and summer come along. And then who knows about next fall?

Top for an apple shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This top is in a pretty fall color and can easily be worn during the holidays. The velvet makes it look a little more luxurious and dressed-up though this would look cute with jeans too. It’s available in black and a light gray.  I didn’t wear any necklace with this because I thought the cut-out would be competing with a necklace.

Top for an apple shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’ve paired it with my black pants (that are called jeggings but don’t fit like leggings at all). These pants are comfortable and easy to wear and black pants are a classic item that every wardrobe could use. Once you find a well fitting pair you will be wearing it for years.

Top for an apple shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

You’ve seen the black booties many times (similar here and here) that show no signs of going out of style. And finishing this off with the scene-stealing purse that still brings a smile to my face every time I see it in the pictures.

Top for an apple shape! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This is a short post about clothing because my mind is on my homefront. We have finally found a house down in North Carolina that we are making an offer on (fingers crossed!) after my husband and our poor realtor visited dozens of homes while having me on video chat to see the house. Also, last night I got a message from our realtor for our Michigan home saying that someone is interested in buying our house for cash (!) but needs to move in right away! That of course kept me up most of the night trying to figure out how we could make that happen if indeed they really are interested in purchasing our home. I kept reminding myself of the saying that “worry is a down payment on an event that may not even come to pass”. Of course, the middle of the night is not the best time for rational thinking! I bet I’ll sleep well tonight! I hope you all have a well-rested weekend too!
