Last Post Of The Year!

Hey everyone! I know I’ve shown a lot of dresses here this fall, for all sorts of occasions, but this one is my favorite for casual or semi-casual gatherings. You’ve seen it before without the vest but I really like how it looks with the vest too. It also went out of stock for awhile bit is back in stock in all sizes!

Perfect Dress for Apple-Shaped Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

If you recall from the first time I wore the dress I mentioned it’s actually a dark, dark blue. When I ordered it online I thought it was black. But, I persisted in wearing it the way I had planned with all black and I think it works just fine!

Perfect Dress for Apple-Shaped Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This dress has really nice stretch and the weight of the fabric means it hangs well and doesn’t cling. It has really pretty sleeves which are on-trend but they’re not so big that they get in the way.

Perfect Dress for Apple-Shaped Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Also, I mentioned a couple of posts ago, I was looking for a new long, black sweater vest. This is one of the finalists. I love the weight of it because it hangs straight down, even though it has a bit of a swingy cut to it. It’s one of my favorite fabric blends of rayon and nylon, so some stretch but skims without clinging. I only wished it had pockets!

When I wear this dress I never realize how short it is. I always feel like it hits mid-knee but when I look at these pictures I see it’s a bit shorter. If you’re not crazy about showing your leg then this dress would look super cute with some leggings or some over the knee boots.

I’ve paired it with my ever-faithful booties (similar here and here) and my “roll the dice” purse (no idea what I’m talking about? explained here).

And, if you’ve ever been curious about ordering a “one size fits all” split-back vest let me put your curiosity to rest!

Perfect Dress for Apple-Shaped Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Nope, not going to work in the front!

Perfect Dress for Apple-Shaped Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And yeah, definitely not going to work in the back! One size fits all? Puhleeeze!

Ok, that’s it for this week and this year! I’m taking next week off because of Christmas, New Year’s, relatives, friends and a trip back to Michigan. I’ll be posting the bloopers post at the start of the year. That is always a fun post to put together! I hope that whatever mixture of holidays you celebrate that you have some fun and some relaxation! Here’s to a well-dressed 2018!

Another Fixer Top!

Hey everyone! I don’t know about you but I am feeling a bit chubby this time of year. Every fall I put on a few pounds when it starts getting dark and cold outside and thick soup with chunks of bread and cheese are what we have for dinner. I think it’s biological that my body is preparing for winter so I don’t beat myself up about it. I know that this is a fall thing and in the spring it’s the complete opposite. Then I start feeling like fruit and vegetables and getting active and the few pounds come off. Like other mammals, I know I go through seasonal changes so I’m not going to agonize over it.

Outfit for Over 40 apple shaped women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

But, in the meantime, some of my outfits are starting to get tight! Yes, I do have some clothes that are my fat clothes and some that are my skinny clothes because I know I am constantly changing but sometimes I want to wear the skinny clothes when I’m a chub. Luckily, I have come up with a couple of fixes for those times. One fix is this top.

Outfit for Over 40 apple shaped women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

You may remember in the fall I wrote about “The Fixer”. That was a top that helped me transition tank tops into fall without wearing hot layers. This top is exactly like it, but with longer sleeves.

I bought this sleeveless dress from TJ Maxx about 7 years ago and it has great stretch and fits well everywhere except in the tummy. It is way too tight and clingy on my midsection and gives this horrible undershadow below my stomach. But, you wouldn’t know that with this top. I’m covered where I want and the sleeveless dress is now weather appropriate. And the top is now 50% off! I love these sales!

Outfit for Over 40 apple shaped women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Loft  has many versions of this top. This one is short sleeve. This one has a flattering square neckline. This one has bell sleeves. This one is a cold shoulder version. This one is sleeveless. This one is a darker blue. They all will be good for the springtime when we’re transitioning to warmer weather but aren’t ready to show off our arms. And they’re all 50% off!

Outfit for Over 40 apple shaped women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And we’re all over the outdated idea that you can’t wear black with navy blue right? I admit, it took me awhile to get used to it, but this outfit shows that blue and black work well with each other. I used to think they were too similar in tone but black is it’s own color and makes every other color look crisp.

These booties are from last year (you’ve seen them a ton) and I can’t find the exact ones anymore but this pair and this pair are really similar and are the same brand as mine.

And the pretty blue clutch is getting lots of use since I own so many blue clothing items.

Ok, that’s it for today. See you all on Friday!

Doing A Bit Of Running This Week!

Hey everyone! Happy Monday! I like everything about this outfit except the gray shirt — just wanted to get that out of the way. I was planning on wearing a striped shirt but it was looking worn and faded. As you know, I’m on a restricted clothes diet so I’m making do!

Over 40 Fashion | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I definitely wanted to show you this vest that you’ve seen before (here) though you probably don’t even recognize it without the fur collar. It is such a cozy knit that I’ve been wearing it in casual outfits without the fur collar, though I’ve been wearing the fur collar as a scarf! If you’ve been waiting for the price to go down now is the time because it’s 50% off!

Over 40 Fashion | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

The jeans you’ve seen before too on my Over The Knee Boots Primer (here) though they were tucked inside my OTK boots at the time so you couldn’t see the pretty ankle detail on these. The color of these jeans match perfectly the color of the leather trim on the sweater. And yes, the jeans are 50% off now too. This is the time to shop for one’s self it seems, if you have all of your holiday shopping done!

Over 40 Fashion | www.whenthegirlsrule.comI’m finishing off this muted color outfit with my soft pink purse and my gray runners. Which is good because I am doing some serious running this week since I’m woefully underprepared for Christmas! And that’s why this post is so short — I’m online shopping at the same time!

Over 40 Fashion | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I hope you have a good start to your week and are not doing the last-minute dash to Christmas! Who am I kidding? We’re probably all doing it! I’ll see you all back on Wednesday!

Pretend I’m Wearing Different Boots!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to get that out of the way and tell you that these boots would not have been my choice to wear with this dress. As you know, I only intended to stay in North Carolina for a week but am staying here for the whole month of December so my outfits are getting wonky while I try to show you different combinations of what I did bring!

Cute Outfit For Apple Shaped Woman! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I would have worn this dress with my other black tall boots that are more form fitting and have a bit of a heel. Or I would have worn my beautiful burgundy boots (they’re back in stock now!). But, nope, these are the ones I brought down with me so that’s what you get to see! These are too wide at the knee for wearing with tights though they work great with pants. Also, even a slight heel would have made this outfit so much nicer.

Cute Outfit For Apple Shaped Woman! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

So, anyway, this dress is a perfect casual dress to wear with leggings. I bought it this fall and am only getting around to showing it to you guys now but that’s good because it’s way on sale and about 1/3 of the cost of when I bought it!

And a jacket that actually zips if you have a big bust! This jacket has been getting a lot of wear here in North Carolina because it’s uncharacteristically cold down here (another thing I wasn’t prepared for!) so I’m wearing this jacket and my holiday wolf sweater (they call it a husky — I think she’s a wolf!) a ton to stay warm! The jacket is also available in plus size here. And I can’t forget my scene-stealing purse!

Well, pretty quick post today since the outfit is really uncomplicated and really easy to wear and doesn’t need a lot of explaining. Have a great weekend ladies!

Mixing Up Three Colors For Some Zing!

Hey everyone! Since I bought these delicious shoes, I’ve been looking for new ways to wear them and to get more color into my wardrobe. So many times I stand in front of my closet and see black, gray and blue. Those are all beautiful colors and all work great as neutrals but sometimes you need to add a little zing!

Colorful Dress Outfit for Plus Size Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

You’ve seen this dress before (here) when I wore it with light gray. I find the dress very flattering on it’s own but sometimes I would like a little more coverage and I wanted to show off these beautiful sleeves. This sleeveless vest was a purchase to add color to my wardrobe but also to let me wear all those gorgeous tops that have the statement sleeves.

When styling this outfit I had to come up with a third color to pull it all together. Wearing only two colors in an outfit and having everything match is a bit outdated and I wasn’t getting any contrast with my new clutch since it matches the dress perfectly. I didn’t want to go with black because that seems like a default. Well, what do you get when you mix blue and red? Duh, purple. Easy solution! I just bought some new tights as another low-cost way to add color to my wardrobe and as I was unpacking boxes I came across a felted scarf I made several years ago (when I used to have hobbies!). Voila!

Colorful Dress Outfit for Plus Size Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

There were several other color combinations I could have done this with (if money were no object!) since this dress comes in red, black and green and the vest comes in camel and gray as well as the red (or pomegranate they call it! I’m getting hungry!) This clutch also has a lovely cream-colored version (or champagne color they call it — now, I’m getting thirsty!) if you’re interested. Ooooh, the green dress with the camel vest and champagne clutch would be a really beautiful color combination!

Colorful Dress Outfit for Plus Size Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Yes, I’m adding to my clutch collection — they make an outfit feel more dressed up when you’re not lugging around your big, day-to-day purse. I’m also finding that they can be another easy, lower cost way to add glamour to an outfit instead of just focusing on the clothing.

Colorful Dress Outfit for Plus Size Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

So, if you’re struggling with adding a third color to an outfit an easy trick is to find what color would result with mixing the two together and going with that color. Often the third color is brown so be prepared!

And these pictures are not an optical illusion! That truly is snow and that truly is a blooming bush here in North Carolina. It is blowing my mind that bushes are flowering this time of year and they’re doing it while it’s snowing! This is going to be interesting!

Getting Ready For The Holidays! (well, sort of!)

Hey everyone! Happy Monday! Are you getting ready for the upcoming parade of holidays? I am way behind because of this move! I’ve bought one gift and that was because I saw it while on vacation this summer. We haven’t even gotten a tree yet but that’s probably because my living room looks like this!

And my dining room looks like this! We’re living like college students again!

This is the furniture we sent down with my husband last spring for his sad bachelor apartment. However it’s now the only furniture we have in our new house since we still have a working house (and farm!) up in Michigan. Our house in North Carolina is completely different than our Michigan house. Our house in Michigan is a 1913 farmhouse that we completely remodeled and has more of an arts and crafts style with dark wood and tiles. You saw some of it in the birthday post. The new house is a midcentury modern ranch that’s really open and bright. After living on a farm and raising two kids and assorted creatures in the house (yes, even chicks and a squirrel…twice!) our furniture is pretty worn out. I am very fortunate to be able to get new furnishings for this house which is an exciting project for me. As many of you know, I have a design degree and I love tackling projects like this. It feels like a good time to change up and lighten up for the next phase in my life.

When I read other people’s blogs I like to see their homes and their pets and the town where they live. I don’t mean seeing a celebrity’s over-the-top mansion that I could never imagine living in, but just seeing where regular people live. I guess I’m just curious about how other people live in other parts of the country and world! So, anyhow, I’ll occasionally be showing you guys how this house is coming along. For one it will keep me progressing to make this house our home which will help me say goodbye to my beloved Michigan home. Secondly, it will keep me from just adapting to bare walls and empty rooms until I stop noticing them. So, stay tuned for that fun diversion from cute outfits!

Holiday Outfit for Plus Size Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Now onto a festive-colored outfit! I love the berry red of the shirt and skirt for the holidays. I’m not really a red and green Christmas color person because they remind me too much of those unattractive grandma sweatshirts that some people associate with someone with gray hair! I also think it’s fun to try to be a little more creative than just going for the expected red and green.

Holiday Outfit for Plus Size Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’ve been trying out some long black sweater vests to replace my old one that is looking haggard. This vest is a nice length and weight and hangs really straight and flattering. I’m not sure about the pockets though. They’re convenient and match up well with the black leather booties but they seem to stand out a lot, or maybe that’s just what I see. It’s still on a trial with me.

Holiday Outfit for Plus Size Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I fell in love with the velvet cuffs of this shirt even though the ribbed fabric is a little too body hugging for me. I tried styling it several ways, but in every way you saw the waistband of the item I wore it with. I tried it over a sleeveless dress which worked well (I might show that in the future) since the dress was a sheath style, so no waistband. But then I remembered the magic belt! (If you have no idea what I’m talking about you can watch the video here)

Holiday Outfit for Plus Size Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

The belt completely hides the waistband of the skirt (and tights and undies) and the vest covers the sides of the belt so you can’t tell it’s just a simple elastic shirt belt (like this). I always forget how helpful this belt is and I need to pull it out more often whenever I’m having waistband issues (and perhaps get it with a gold buckle like this one!).

Holiday Outfit for Plus Size Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

The deep berry color and black seemed pretty saturated and heavy so I lightened it up with this sparkly scarf which you’ve seen before (here) when I wore it as a shawl and I chose a lighter-colored bag to also help lighten up the outfit. My booties are from last year but there are very similar styles available from Calvin Klein here and here.

And these photographs were all taken in our backyard in NC. That huge, beautiful magnolia tree is a perfect backdrop for photos so expect to see it a lot. Ok, kind of a long post today (I seem to be extra chatty on Mondays…hmmm) so I’ll let you go and I’ll talk to you on Wednesday!

When Plans Change!

Hey everyone! So, I meant to show you this dress on it’s own and with a black vest over the top. Unfortunately my camera stopped working before I got the vest on so here is the dress on it’s own. The best laid plans…..

Dress for Curvy Woman! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

The dress is a nice lighter ponte fabric made of my favorite combination of rayon and stretchy spandex. The sleeves have a little flare at the wrist so it’s an understated way to wear the pretty sleeve trend. It’s also another example of if it looks bad on the model then it will probably work for our shape!

Dress for Curvy Woman! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

When I bought it (and I saw the fabric in person not online) I thought it was black stripes but it’s actually a really dark blue. I didn’t notice it was blue until I put on the black vest and then you could only see right where the two fabrics were touching each other that the dress is blue. That put a wrench in how I was planning on wearing it I thought.

Dress for Curvy Woman! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

So, since I don’t have have dark, dark blue tights or shoes I decided to treat it just like black and wore black tights, my black purse and leopard print shoes. This is how I was planning on wearing it when I thought it was still black. In these images and in real life these colors work together because the blue is so dark. If I couldn’t tell it was blue then I was just going to assume other’s couldn’t tell too!

Dress for Curvy Woman! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

My shoes are several years old but here and here are comparable pairs and this pair looks exactly the same.

Dress for Curvy Woman! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And in other news of changed plans… If you’re a regular reader you know that I’ve popped down to North Carolina to get us moved in to our new house but we still have a house in Michigan. We’ve decided to take our Michigan house off of the market until spring since both of our daughters will be commuting to Michigan State University next semester (go green!). I intended to get my husband moved into our NC house then head back up to Michigan but he will be traveling for work and there is so much to do to get us moved in here that I’ve decided to stay here for the whole month of December. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring a month of clothing so you’ll be seeing some of the same things on repeat here. Staying flexible and adapting to change has been my 2017! Have a great weekend everyone!

A Holiday Sweater You Can Stand!

Hey everyone! I know there are a lot of Christmas sweaters out there that you can only wear for one or two days because they’re so holiday-specific or are really unattractive but I found a cute one that will work for the whole winter.

Winter Outfit for Curvy Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This sweater reminds me of the children’s movie Balto that my kids watched over and over when they were little. I love the husky (of course!) but also the stars. I’ve paired it with my really old leggings from Kohl’s and my tall boots.

Winter Outfit for Curvy Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’ve added to my purse collection with two purses that are lower cost and lighter color this winter. I knew I’d be wearing a lot of black and I wanted to lighten up the outfits. You saw the tan and black purse last week and this cute little soft pink bag is the newest addition.

Winter Outfit for Curvy Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’m down in North Carolina right now so this light faux shearling jacket is the perfect weight. And the added bonus for this coat is it can be zipped up over an ample bust, it’s available in plus size and it’s 1/2 off right now!

Winter Outfit for Curvy Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This is the back patio of my new house. It’s going to be my default location for photos when I don’t have time to find a better location so you’ll probably being seeing it occasionally. I’m a bit buried in boxes right now so Friday’s outfit post will be in the same location.

Winter Outfit for Curvy Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I also brought two of our cats down in this trip and they’re adjusting to being city cats. An orange and white neighbor cat has been trying to make their acquaintance but they’re not too sure about it!

Winter Outfit for Curvy Women! | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And in the last post I mentioned I bought a Christmas wreath but wasn’t able to hang it up since half of my house is still in Michigan (really more like 2/3!) and half down here. You will be happy to know that I found what I needed to hang it up and now the house is starting to look lived in! Now, to do something about these empty rooms!

More OTK Boots!

Hey everyone! Happy Monday! I hope you had a good weekend! I have spent the weekend moving my husband out of his sad bachelor apartment and into our house in Charlotte. Since we haven’t moved in a while (15 years) we are rookies at this and failed to anticipate a lot of things — like getting city water turned on! We’ve been on a well for our last two houses and didn’t realize this crucial step. We also didn’t realize that since we haven’t sold the house in Michigan we don’t have furniture to move into our new house. As I write this I’m sitting in a rocking chair, one of two chairs we have here (and nothing else!). Needless to say we’re living a bit sparse right now!

Fall Outfit for Plus Size Women - www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And onto the outfit! I showed these over the knee boots (OTK boots as they’re known in the blogosphere!) on Friday and shared what I’ve learned about them for anyone thinking about trying out this new item. It definitely is a new look, like wearing cropped pants, that takes some getting used to. So, even though the look is different they feel just like tall boots, only taller! They’re also really warm, so these will be a great way to continue wearing leggings and skirts during cold weather.

Fall Outfit for Plus Size Women - www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I’m going to try styling them with a skirt or dress next so you can see that look. This also is a good way to wear a skirt or dress you have that’s maybe a bit too short for your comfort. With these boots your legs will have coverage and still stay warm and you can pull out a beloved skirt that you haven’t worn in a while! I’ve paired them with new skinny leg jeggings that you’ve seen before and a great all-around blouse with a pretty pattern (and is 40% off today!).

Fall Outfit for Plus Size Women - www.whenthegirlsrule.com

You can also see the textured detail on the handle of my “roll of the dice” purse. No idea what I’m talking about? Online the purse is silver metal but when I received it, it was gold metal. So if you’re a risk-taker, roll the dice and see which purse you get when you order it online! I’d love to hear which one you get. Not a risk taker? Here is the same purse with less bling (and in red and gray) and both bags are 30% off now! If you’ve been waiting for the pumpkin purse to go on sale it’s now 30% off too!

Fall Outfit for Plus Size Women - www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Ok, I’m off to unpack more boxes and do some furniture shopping. We’ve decided to have Christmas down here, at least just the 4 of us, so I need to get some beds and chairs and at least one table. I did buy my first item for the house: a Christmas wreath for the front door. Now if only I can find some nails or tape or wire or something to hang it! Have a great week everyone!

Over The Knee Boots Primer!

Hey everyone! Happy Friday! I’m wearing my new Over The Knee (OTK) boots I promised I’d show you on Wednesday. I took the leap because these were a really low cost way to give this style a try. These are an exciting addition for me because they’re very different from what I’m used to wearing and I enjoy trying to style something completely new!

Over 40 Fashion for Plus Size Women | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

I had my daughter take these pictures as I was headed out to the mall because I thought I looked so cute! I will say though I noticed I got two side-eye glances from women my age while at the mall and I think it was because of the boots. Now, it could be that they were just thinking how cute I looked or perhaps looking to see how I styled them but didn’t want to stare. I’m not sure, because that hasn’t happened (or I haven’t noticed) in a long time. But, I did what I always do when I’m in that situation: I held my chin high and said to myself “You are one foxy lady” and continued my shopping.

Over 40 Fashion for Plus Size Women | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Now, these boots are different from the ones I wore on Wednesday. Those burgundy boots came to just over my knee cap and these boots are higher. Because the OTK boots are associated with younger women (or Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman), I thought I’d share a couple of strategies to keep you from looking like you’re trying to look like a teenager (or a hooker!) and thanks to Jodie from J Touch of Style for showing that women of any age can wear these boots!

So, first off you can try them with a low heel or no heel. This makes you look more serious and industrious (and makes me feel like Robin Hood)!

Try the suede rather than the shiny leather. The shiny leather is more attention grabbing.

Blend the color of the boot with the color of the pants. There will be less contrast at the top of the boots and it won’t draw the eye.

Wear with a skirt or dress where the hem covers the top of the boot. This way you get the leg coverage (and warmth — they’re really warm!) while you start to feel more comfortable wearing them and realize that they’re not that big of a deal.

Over 40 Fashion for Plus Size Women | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

Now, let’s talk about fit. If you’re built like me or similar you probably have wide legs. One reason I was afraid of trying these boots was because I was afraid they would be tight in the thighs like most boots are tight in the calves. Actually there are more options to fit a wide thigh than there are to fit wide calves. Believe it!

Look for a style that is more open in the back of the boot behind the knee, like this pair and this pair.

Or, do our favorite sleuthing tactic and look to see if they look too big on the model like here and here.

Over 40 Fashion for Plus Size Women | www.whenthegirlsrule.com

And finally, I noticed that there seem to be three different ways to keep these boots from falling down.

One is they are really tight, almost like leather or suede tights, and they stay up by constriction. See this example and this example. That’s not really the look I’m going for plus they’re pretty impossible to wear over clothing so you’d have to have bare legs. Pass!

Then there is another style where a string at the top ties them up (see here and here for what I mean). I haven’t tried this and I know many women seem happy with them, I just imagine them constantly slipping down and the strings loosening and constantly having to pull them up and re-tie them. Not my thing.

Third option is what I’m wearing. The fabric over the knee is stiff and stays in place. In some options it’s because it’s stiff leather (like here) or stiff because it has some thin padding that keeps it rigid and upright, like mine. It could just be the fabric doubled over that makes it stiff but it seems like there is some sort of stiff padding under the fabric. Either way, they’re stiff enough to stay up and flexible enough that they don’t chafe my knee when I’m walking.

I’m finishing off this outfit with new jeans and this old sweater you’ve already seen before (here) and a pretty necklace. I also have a new purse that I bought to lighten up my black outfits without having to bring out the pumpkin!

Ok, whew! I didn’t realize this would be such a long post when I started writing it. I’m back in North Carolina enjoying the weather and my new house. Stay tuned on Instagram stories for more tours of the house including the room I’m calling My Blog Room! Have a wonderful weekend!
