Chic and Comfy: Jeans and a Sweater!

Hey everyone! I realized I hadn’t worn my jeans recently on the blog so thought I’d pull them out and wear them with this cute asymmetrical sweater that I got for Christmas.

I know jeans are hard to find for an apple shape so I thought I’d share my insight with you all. If you’re not an apple-shape, be thankful, and now you’ll get some insight into all the steps we have to take to find clothes that fit.

These jeans have stretch and actually fit around my waist. However, as you know if you’re an apple shape, they slide down easily, so I have to yank them up all the time, unless I wear a belt. And I wear a belt every time with these. It’s just a thin belt that will never be shown but does it’s job of keeping the jeans up. But, you know all this if you’re an apple shape, the belt then creates a dent in your middle and looks terrible. So, my next step is to make sure I’m wearing a top that doesn’t show this dent in my midsection.

I often wear a cropped jacket with these jeans. Or, I can wear them with a top that skims over my middle so the dent is hidden underneath, and often wear a camisole too. That is the option I took here. It’s a casual, asymmetrical sweater that fits well in my bust and shoulders and skims over my middle without looking like a tent. The flare of the jeans help balance out my wide bust and, I think, looks a bit sassy.

You will be happy to see that I’m adding to my purse collection! I usually wear a purse that I hang on my elbow. The purses that hang on a long strap on my shoulder always slide off, do to the slope of my shoulders. However, there are times when I want to throw it over my shoulder and I found this short version works. I can wear it on the crook of my elbow or on my shoulder. It also adds a great pop of color to this pretty tame outfit. My exact color is on sale for a limited time and you can find it in several pretty colors here and here and the exact blue, but different style I seriously contemplated, here.

  1. I love the asymmetrical sweater Julia!! I always think they are so much more fun than a straight hemline.
So since you were discussing apple shapes and jeans, can I ask you a question? I was trying to help out a friend once who has a tummy bulge. I was wondering if any of the maternity styles would work? Have you ever tried that? Or is that rude to ask?

    1. No, it’s not rude to ask. I have not tried it though others here have suggested it. Some have suggested mens pants too. If it works for her and she likes the way it looks then tell her to go for it. I can’t get over the fact that I would have to shop at a maternity shop to find jeans that fit and it actually kinda pisses me off so that’s why I haven’t tried. But, it is probably a very viable option.

  2. Argggh! The struggle to find jeans that fit. It is so frustrating to find that most plus size jeans are made for those that carry their weight in the hips and thighs. I don’t have big thighs/legs. I find a pair to fit my middle and discover that there is room for myself and few friends in the thigh area. Having said that, I have found that the Denizen brand from Target fits me well (straight size not plus size). By the way, last winter I got the best compliment from a co worker. We were attending a conference and I had dressed in leggings and a big shirt. She looked at me and said “Wow, you have such tiny little legs!” They are not tiny, but boy that made me float on air the rest of the day!

    1. Hey Robin, for some reason your comments are going into my spam box, so I’m late replying to you! I’ll check the spam box more often, weird. Anyway, I will look into Denizen (if I can remember!) because pants are the hardest thing to find. I love that people see your legs as tiny. My legs used to be the biggest part of me, but, alas, no more! Thanks for joining in!

  3. I love the sweater, Julia — very flattering!

Regarding jeans — I’m one of the ones who suggested trying maternity jeans, with the caveat that I, too, don’t want to shop in a boutique maternity store full of young, pregnant women. So, if I *were* to venture into trying the jeans, I’d go to a large department store, scoop up multiple styles, and then head back to the misses department to try them on.

Imogen, of the wonderful Inside Out Style blog, is one blogger who recommends O-shaped women (apples) consider maternity jeans.

I’m not sure that they wouldn’t slide down just as much as any other style pants. But, if I do ever try these, I’ll be sure to buy the kind with a stretchy, comfortable waist panel. I find the metal button and zipper on “normal” jeans to be extremely uncomfortable.

Another option is Jag jeans. They’re pull-on jeans with no hardware. Many women love them, but I haven’t yet found a style that’s long enough for me.

    1. Yes, Bette, to all of what you said! Also jeggings, that look like jeans but really are glorified tights, are an option. I have yet to try those though so can’t offer an opinion. Still not sure if I would try the maternity pants, though. I think I’ve got a mental block on them!
