I Would If I Could…Fun Sleeves

Hey everyone! First Friday post. First dressing room post too. So, if you’re looking at any fashion images, you’ve seen the fun ways they’re designing sleeves now. They are very wide and flowy and flouncy and fun, but some don’t look very practical, like they would drag in your lunch. This is definitely a quick trend that will probably be gone in a year or two, so don’t spend a lot of money on it, but it’s an easy way to freshen up your wardrobe and add some fun.

I had a reader ask about shopping at Kohl’s since they’re from a small town and don’t have many options. I visited my local Kohl’s and though I didn’t find much, I did find a few cute things like this top.Flounced sleeve top - www.whenthegirlsrule.com

This top has the fun sleeves that are wide and flouncy (I tried to show how fun they are in one image) but they’re short enough, ending at the elbow instead of the wrist, so they won’t get in the way of eating or typing. I also really like this dark, pretty print and the keyhole tie at the neckline.Flounced sleeve top - www.whenthegirlsrule.com

It fit well in the bust and hung nicely over my midsection. I also liked how it ended kind of short, so would pair well with jeans or a skirt. It’s a nice weight that will take you into spring and summer too.

I’m wearing my cargo pants from White House Black Market that you’ve seen before here. They have newer, fresher colors here if you’re looking for a cute cargo pant that doesn’t add volume with the leg pockets.

Ok, these images are killing me but I’ve come to accept that more knowledge is better than nothing. I’m working on the video today, so stay tuned!

  1. Very flattering shape on you! Could easily wear in the winter with a long-sleeve something underneath. Might have to make a trip to Kohl’s.

  2. I hate to be the naysayer, but this is not my favorite. I think the pattern is too large, too busy, and looks kind of cheap. I think a few inches longer in the body would be more flattering. And, I don’t care for the ruffles at the ends of the sleeves.

To me, this blouse screams polyester.

Luckily, I know you welcome dissenting opinions!

  3. I love this new concept!! So, about the pants… I love them! I know there is a White House Black Market somewhere around me, but getting to one with a 5 year old and 15 month old is not going to happen any time soon. So, how do you pick the size pants? I’m afraid if I go by waist, they’ll just fall down and be baggy everywhere but the waist. If I go by hip, then the waist will be too tight. Any suggestions? Or am I just going to have to bite the bullet and take the baby clothes shopping with me while the 5 year old is at school.

    1. Hi Ann! Yes, sorry, it’s probably best to just go in and try them on. When I had little kids I would buy the clothes and then try them on at home and take back what didn’t work. Or, if you’re comfortable with this, there are always lots of friendly ladies working there who might hold a toddler. I always make sure the waist works and if they’re baggy other places then I probably wouldn’t buy them, but these are slim legged everywhere else so might work for you. Good luck!

  4. I would never have even tried a top like that on, until I saw how it looks on you. I generally avoid clothes that have lots of fabric because I have this mental image of myself as a hulking great draped statue walking down the hall. But this is seriously cute, and I’d probably try to wear it with a long-sleeved top underneath for winter.

One thing I don’t have is a slim silhouette — I have wide hips with thigh bumps, and they emphasize extra fabric (sharkbite hems, etc.). But I’ll try on one of these tops just to see how it looks. Thanks for showing this!

  5. I love the “I Would if I Could” concept, very clever!

You’ve inspired me to try “mo’ different” in the fitting room. I tend to take the same styles in All. The. Time. NO MORE GREY CARDIGANS!! Well, maybe one more, I’d like a light grey one with pockets. GAH! IT’S A SERIOUS PROBLEM!

But yeah, there’s no harm in trying and sometimes you end up being surprised!
