Mixing Up Three Colors For Some Zing!

Hey everyone! Since I bought these delicious shoes, I’ve been looking for new ways to wear them and to get more color into my wardrobe. So many times I stand in front of my closet and see black, gray and blue. Those are all beautiful colors and all work great as neutrals but sometimes you need to add a little zing!

You’ve seen this dress before (here) when I wore it with light gray. I find the dress very flattering on it’s own but sometimes I would like a little more coverage and I wanted to show off these beautiful sleeves. This sleeveless vest was a purchase to add color to my wardrobe but also to let me wear all those gorgeous tops that have the statement sleeves.

When styling this outfit I had to come up with a third color to pull it all together. Wearing only two colors in an outfit and having everything match is a bit outdated and I wasn’t getting any contrast with my new clutch since it matches the dress perfectly. I didn’t want to go with black because that seems like a default. Well, what do you get when you mix blue and red? Duh, purple. Easy solution! I just bought some new tights as another low-cost way to add color to my wardrobe and as I was unpacking boxes I came across a felted scarf I made several years ago (when I used to have hobbies!). Voila!

There were several other color combinations I could have done this with (if money were no object!) since this dress comes in red, black and green and the vest comes in camel and gray as well as the red (or pomegranate they call it! I’m getting hungry!) This clutch also has a lovely cream-colored version (or champagne color they call it — now, I’m getting thirsty!) if you’re interested. Ooooh, the green dress with the camel vest and champagne clutch would be a really beautiful color combination!

Yes, I’m adding to my clutch collection — they make an outfit feel more dressed up when you’re not lugging around your big, day-to-day purse. I’m also finding that they can be another easy, lower cost way to add glamour to an outfit instead of just focusing on the clothing.

So, if you’re struggling with adding a third color to an outfit an easy trick is to find what color would result with mixing the two together and going with that color. Often the third color is brown so be prepared!

And these pictures are not an optical illusion! That truly is snow and that truly is a blooming bush here in North Carolina. It is blowing my mind that bushes are flowering this time of year and they’re doing it while it’s snowing! This is going to be interesting!

    1. Ha ha! Thank you! The scarf was fun and I’m determined to get back to my hobbies. I’m looking forward to the firsts and exploring this state’s natural beauty though I’m heading back to Michigan in January (what was I thinking?). I’m enjoying the weather here now at least!

  1. You look wonderful. Like the colors. Enjoy NC and look forward to Michigan. You will have to get your long johns out. ❄🌻

  2. I love the dress with the vest, very pretty combo. Also, the clutch looks good. I would never add the third color options you chose but then I guess I am more classic (boring).

  3. I love the colour combination, when I first saw your shoes I thought they were two toned red and purple then realised the purple was your tights.!!

    1. Those would be some shoes if they were red and purple! I’ve wondered how those shoes would look with a heavy contrast since I’ve only worn them with bare skin or similar colored tights. I will have to give that a try soon! Thank you so much for commenting Pauline!

  4. Three words for you: Room and Board. To die for beautiful modern furniture. Just about anything from there would look lovely in your new house.
