Really, I Don’t Do This Intentionally!

Hey everyone! When I do a photo shoot, I honestly think the outfit looks good. I really don’t want bad pictures of myself out on the internet! So, I thought this top looked good in the store. I thought it looked good in front of the full length mirror in my bedroom. I thought it looked good when we were photographing. But, when I started looking at the pictures…bad.

I’m always on the look out for a shirt for warmer weather, that gives me coverage without having to wear another layer over it. I thought this tie type shirt would do the trick. I have a cotton sweater with the similar style that I like that you’ve seen before. Why would the shirt be any different?

The fabric is the first problem. It’s thin so it doesn’t hang well. In fact it clings and goes against my advice of “Skim Don’t Cling”.

The color is the second problem. This tan does not do anything for my coloring. I was trying something new besides blue and black and was seduced by the polka dots!

The third problem is it has a lower neckline than I had thought. I think it makes my chest bigger. It seems that there is so much skin there and yet not even a peep of cleavage. It really emphasizes that gravity is winning!

I’m wearing my new jeans that have changed my life (seriously on sale now) and my cute ballet flats from last fall. The toe box seems short so you might want to order a 1/2 size up. If you’re curious, the top is here and doesn’t even look good on the model. Just goes to show you that if the model can’t pull it off, probably not going to work on a curvier woman!

Today is the last day to sign up for email to be included in my birthday give-away. If you’re already signed up, then you’re already entered. I’ll announce the winners on Friday!

  1. So Julia—I just have to disagree with you on many points!
First I don’t think the style of this shirt is awful on you AT ALL!! In fact I looked at it and my first reaction was what a lovely, interesting top (I get so bored of the plain t-shirts lately)!
The only thing I agree with you on is the color isn’t your best. But in my eyes that’s easily remedied with a small, colorful neck scarf–or even a bright necklace??
No way do I think this top is too low for you—it’s nice to see some skin without seeing the girls!!
I’m just going to put it out there, that you might be too critical. I do it all the time to myself—especially when I’m looking at blog photos!! That’s why it’s good to ask for an unbiased opinion (like myself–smiley face here)!
So wear this top with confidence—you look fantastic!!

  2. I don’t even notice the clingy-ness, and like the fit/cut of the shirt on you. The tie disguises the tummy/waist. Color is definitely not good; try a necklace or scarf – either might balance out the tie and bring more color up towards your face.

  3. I have to say that I think the top looks really good on you. The only thing is the color. It does wash you out, but I’m with everyone above who says to try it with a colorful necklace or scarf.

And while I agree with you that the model does not look good in the top, I think you do it justice. Even though wispy, willowy models tend to look good in most clothing, there are some items that require a more womanly figure to fill them out, lol. I think the top looks a lot better on you!

  4. I agree with other commenters…perhaps a pink/coral lip ? A more sparkly earring? Perhaps tie the knot a little higher, right under the girls? Are the tops connected? Its just bunching the little at the bottom…I think this looks pretty good, overall…

  5. I’m 50/50 on the top. I think the style of the tied part looks great, even in that color (and I’ll admit I’m not a fan of polka dots but I still think this is cute). But I think because of your complexion and light hair, it would look better if the undershirt part was either black or brown. But overall I think it’s a cute Spring look.

And you do look better in it than the model 🙂

  6. I read your post and thought, “I need to tell Julie that the only thing wrong with this is the color, and it looks super cute with those jeans!” Ha! Everyone beat me to it. Don’t give up on this style of top!

  7. I like the shirt shape on you. I think it emphasizes your waist. I also don’t think that it is too lowcut, Perhaps filling in the neckline with a necklace would make you feel more covered up. The only think I would prefer to be different is the color. A red polka dot would be lovely. Take it from a fellow apple, it looks better than you think!

  8. Aside from the color, I think this is one of the more flattering tops you’ve worn on the blog. Intuitively, I would have said that a big knot right in the center of apple’s problem area wouldn’t be the best choice but the diagonal lines created by the ties going into the knot enhance your figure. And in no way is this top cut too low for you. I think you nailed it with this silhouette; it’s just too bad about the color. And I really like the ballet flats.

    1. Gosh thank Lilypie! The cutes are super adorable and I agree with you about the knot. I own two other tops that knot in the front and from the side the knot sticks out but the view from the front is usually the best. Thank you so much for your two cents! I love new commenters!

  9. I like the top a lot, and think that the light colour picks up the sheen on your blonde hair. Also think that it would look lovely under an open blue or navy wrap. Ultimately, though, the success of an outfit depends on how the wearer feels in it, doesn’t it? Sometimes I don’t want to wear a perfectly okay outfit ever again because of how I’ve responded to it, or because of an experience I’ve had that day. First world problems, right? Thanks for the fun blog.

    1. Yes, definitely this problem will not stop the world from spinning or really anything! I totally agree with you that many times it is the feel of an outfit that maybe people don’t see. I’m going to give it another go, so stay tuned!

  10. I agree with everyone else. Maybe not the best color, but I think that is the only thing I would change. It really does look much better on you than on the model. I really think if you add a scarf or a necklace you might change your mind. It looks so cute with the jeans and ballet flats. I wonder why you are not seeing what everyone else is seeing? I guess that is a good reason to have a blog. 😉
