A Sweater and Leggings? Pants? Jeggings?

Hey everyone! I’ve been trying to add more color and pattern to my wardrobe. I have so much black and gray that I can’t justify any more! However, when I look for a pattern and different color, I want to be able to wear it with all of that black and gray!

This sweater plays nicely with both colors. Plus, I think the colors and light cotton knit will work for most seasons. It also has that lovely waterfall collar, or fly-away collar, that I find so flattering. It is just the right weight to hang straight without clinging and the horizontal seam in the back gives it some structure and makes it more fitted. It’s available here in plus sizes.

To start lightening things up for spring I added my light gray boots and a light gray shirt (look! I’m figuring out this pattern-mixing!). I had originally pulled out my black tall boots and my black turtleneck. I just couldn’t do it. I’ve worn them so much this winter and the day was so sunny and warm! I needed something lighter plus these boots are so comfortable, I really look for any opportunity to wear them.

I’m wearing pants from several years ago that, too me, are almost leggings, but not quite. They are the stretchy fabric, but they’re thicker and not as tight as leggings. I think of leggings as thick tights or like running pants. These pants have a sewn seam/pleat in the front which pushes them into the pant category. I don’t care to show my behind in them and they don’t have any pockets for added coverage, but they fit well in front and I don’t feel the need to cover my crotch with a longer shirt. I find with most leggings I feel the need to cover to about mid-thigh, but these feel more like pants where you could wear a shorter top.

These pants look similar and have a nice wide waistband if you’re interested in the same brand. I’m still trying to figure the whole leggings vs. jeggings vs. stretchy pants thing. For one, you buy the jeggings in a package (like tights) so you don’t even get to try them on. How do you ladies differentiate between pants, jeggings and leggings? I don’t know. Right now, I’m just basing it off of my comfort level. If I figure it out, or if one of you ladies have already figured it out, enlighten us! Happy Monday everyone!

  1. Cute outfit!

I look forward to hearing others’ feedback about leggings. I have yet to find a pair that doesn’t slide down due to my lack of a well-defined waist. My closest solution has been to buy the Old Navy High-Rise leggings in Tall, which are cut longer in the rise. And yes, I’m tall, so the length works ok, too. Short people like you, Julia, could order the cropped length in Tall and probably end up with a full-length legging. You must order them, but can easily return to a store or via mail.

  2. PS. I think the lines of the sweater are an ingenious and thoughtful mix of horizontal and vertical. I didn’t notice until I went to the website.

  3. To me, “jeggings” are a cross between jeans and leggings. So they’re seamed like jeans, have a fly closure like jeans, but are made of super stretchy fabric like leggings. I have SEEN “jeggings” sold in the pack like leggings, but to me if they don’t have a fly and are pull-on, they’re leggings not jeggings.

But you say potayto, I say potahto, it doesn’t really matter what anything’s called, just try it all on and see what works best for you 🙂

Yay, I’m not the only one thinking about starting to dress with an eye towards spring!

    1. Yeah, I’m really liking the idea behind jeggings b/c they should be easier to wear than traditional jeans but not sure where to draw the line on keeping the middle regions covered. Sounds like a new post idea. Glad you’ve made it out of Maine!

  4. So, I thought I had suddenly found the Holy Grail and was excited to write you about it. However, epic fail.

A unitard! Cleaning out my closet, I stumbled upon an old black, cotton unitard — basically a sleeveless leotard with leggings. Because it’s a one-piece thing, there’s nothing tight around the waist and there’s nothing to slide down. But, I traded not hitching up my leggings for a strong downward tug on my shoulders that ended up bugging the cr*p out of me. Plus, of course, there’s the royal pain of having to get undressed to pee.

    So close! But not cigar.
