Whoa! Look at this Pattern-Mixing!

Hey everyone! A couple of posts ago I was talking about how I’m tip-toeing into pattern mixing. It’s a fun trend right now of mixing different patterns in one outfit (remember when that was a no-no?). There are lots of “tips” on how to mix but really it’s just about trying different combinations until you find what you like. I find it’s easier to mix a pattern in a shirt with a pattern in a scarf as a first step, but when I pulled this dress out, I knew I wanted to try to match a pattern to this dress.

Serious pattern mixing!

I love this dress but don’t wear it very often. I don’t know why because I love the design of the watercolor paint and the black panels on the side are super flattering. It’s also got a really straight structure to it, especially in the skirt, which I find works well for my shape. This dress is a couple of years old but I’ve seen similar ones with the black panels on the sides and I definitely recommend trying one on.

This fun jacket you’ve seen before here. It’s a shorter sleeve length that I don’t usually wear but supposedly 3/4 length sleeves are flattering.

Serious pattern mixing!

One thing about being an apple shape is recognizing that dresses may be my new best friend. I’m finding since dresses don’t have that whole annoying waistband thing they are easier to wear. Plus, it means I only need a dress then some sort of third piece over the dress and my outfit is complete.

Serious pattern mixing!

Where am I?

We did these photos at the Henry Ford Estate in Dearborn, Michigan. It’s a beautiful home with beautiful gardens so you probably will be seeing it again. Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I agree with you — dresses are our best friends. I refuse to wear anything tight around my waist any longer. Which brings me to the issue of what to wear underneath — the dreaded stockings and tights.

  2. I love both the dress and the jacket, but separately. ๐Ÿ˜‰ For someone like me who suffers from migraines, this outfit, while tons of fun, would trigger a migraine. I’m really not trying to be rude at all, but just wanted to give you a head’s up in case you work with someone who does suffer from them like I do. I honestly have been triggered by things some of the students I taught wore and had to go home early once because the headache got so bad and I get the auras with them, it was hard to even see.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

  3. What a fabulous bit of pattern mixing Julia! I think the comment about the migraine is really interesting as I suffer from them myself and as you know pattern clashing is one of my favourite plays. I can honestly say it’s never happened to me, but maybe that’s cos I’m not looking at it all day. Poor Debbie.
I love the whole outfit sweetie, and think you’re getting on with this pattern play like an expert now. Wonderful!
    Have a fab weekend x

  4. Hello! So glad I just re-found you & yer great blog! I also grew up just outside Detroit until just over a decade ago when we moved almost an hour outside the city and now living the country life. I’m really enjoying all your posts and fab fashion tips cuz I’m in the 50something category myself now but still trying not to frump out! Keep up the good work!! Cathy C.

  5. Woah, look at you go, Julia. That’s a gorgeous play of patterns, especially with the additions of white and yellow ๐Ÿ™‚ I too have an issue when working with uniformed prints, they flare up my migraine and my astigmatism goes over the moon so I end up either wearing sunnies whilst pulling the outfit together, or just move on to the next chapter ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Sunday!!
